Climate Pledge of the National Bank of Slovakia

10. 11. 2021 | Information for Public

Intensifying impacts of climate change pose direct and indirect long-term risks to the real economy and financial stability, and therefore carry implications for central banks all around the world.

In order to responsibly fulfill our duties and deliver on our mandate, we must be able to analyze, understand, and adequately respond to challenges and risks linked to climate change.

On the occasion of the 2021 United Nations Climate Conference (COP26) in Glasgow, we reiterate our willingness to contribute, within our mandate, to the global response to climate change.

The National Bank of Slovakia (NBS) with its own pledge - as a member of both – supports the collective commitment made through the Network for Greening the Financial System (NGFS) and European Central Bank (ECB) declarations.

We are committed to gradually integrate sustainability into our core functions and internal operations. In the coming years, the NBS pledges to:

  • deepen the understanding of the effects of climate change on financial stability and the economy,
  • engage with policy makers, the financial sector, academia, and other relevant stakeholders to promote discussion at a broad level, emerging best practice, identify challenges and solutions,
  • raise awareness of and monitor climate change-related risks in banks, insurance companies and other financial service providers,
  • set supervisory expectations,
  • promote harmonized disclosure and reporting practices on climate and other sustainability-related factors,
  • develop a risk assessment framework and a sustainability strategy for our own portfolios,
  • reduce the carbon impact of our own business operations,
  • communicate the importance of our engagement in this context.
