Mr Horváth said: “The project to build up an open and modern central bank in Slovakia appealed to me. This vision includes the bank establishing an international reputation as a source of high-quality contributions to technical discussions and decision-making at the European level. A concurrent ambition is to increase public awareness in Slovakia about the seemingly remote developments in Frankfurt, at the European Central Bank, as well as to listen closely to, and be responsive to, what people here are saying about life with the single currency. My main task will be to strengthen and lead an analytical team that supports these ambitions by producing outputs of calibre, interest, and clarity.”

Mr Horváth has done most of his post-graduate and academic work in England, first at the University of York and then at the University of Oxford, focusing on issues related to monetary and fiscal policy. His research has been published in leading international journals, and he has presented his work at seminars and conferences around the world.

In addition to his academic career, Mr Horváth was one of the founding members of Slovakia’s Council for Budget Responsibility, and he has represented his country at economic fora of the highest level. He has also worked for the Slovak Finance Ministry, during which time he participated in Slovakia’s negotiations on joining the euro area and was a member of the Economic and Financial Committee of the European Union.
