Summer School 2025
application form
Applied generative AI for economics and research
Applied generative AI for economics and research
NBS Summer school
30 June – 4 July 2025
Venue: National Bank of Slovakia
Overview
Generative AI is transforming the way we conduct economic and financial research and analysis. From automating tedious data processing tasks to uncovering new insights through advanced analytics, AI enhances the efficiency, accuracy, and predictive capabilities of our analytic toolboxes. With the ability to analyse vast amounts of textual and numerical data, AI-driven models are becoming indispensable tools for policymakers, researchers, and financial analysts.
This week-long training aims to equip participants with essential skills for integrating generative AI into their research and analysis, bridging the gap between basic prompt usage and advanced applications. We will focus on leveraging AI for computing, modelling, programming, and data analysis, empowering attendees to incorporate these technologies more effectively into their work.
Format
The event will focus on practical, hands-on applications, with minimal theory, to ensure participants leave with tangible skills and knowledge. While some theoretical concepts will be covered, the primary focus will be on solving real-world use cases relevant to economic research and analysis.

Programme
The following are the questions that we could address and discuss.
- Understanding Gen-AI: How does it work? A brief introduction to LLM architecture, tokenization, and embeddings.
- Literature Review & Research Analysis: Summarizing, BibTeX generation, referencing published papers, and applying analytical techniques.
- Textual Analysis: Sentiment analysis, zero-shot vs. few-shot learning.
- Efficient Prompt Writing: Counterarguments, text editing, brainstorming, and feedback strategies.
- Advanced Data Analysis: Applying AI to econometrics and structural models, including Wolfram Alpha for computations.
- Programming with ChatGPT: Chain-of-thought reasoning, meta-prompting techniques.
- Customized AI Applications: Developing a personalized GPT-based application, ChatGPT API usage, and data classification
- Interactive Sessions: Engaging demonstrations and exercises showcasing practical applications.
- Hands-on methods: Writing code with LLMs, using LLMs via API for labelling and classification. Complete solution supported by LLMs (research question, methodological design, code writing, conclusions). Step-by-step tutoring along the way.
- Field-relevant applications: Bias in LLMs, Classification of disinformation sources.
Prerequisites
Participants should:
- be familiar with research methodologies in economics,
- have a specific project using AI in mind or in preparation.
- have at least basic understanding of programming.
Participants must have:
- their own laptop with a working python environment.
- access to a premium AI model (preferably ChatGPT Plus) is recommended.
- a small budget to purchase LLM API tokens at the beginning of the course.
