Národná banka Slovenska joins the global fight against climate change

Národná banka Slovenska (NBS) today became the newest member of the “coalition of the willing”, a network of central banks and supervisory authorities which is committed to addressing and analysing the financial risks and opportunities associated with climate change and with the transition to a low-carbon economy. Officially called the Network for Greening the Financial System (NGFS), the coalition promotes investment in the low-carbon economy and the use of funding to mitigate the impact of climate change.

Commenting on the occasion, NBS Governor Peter Kažimír said: “I’m proud that Národná banka Slovenska has joined the coalition of the willing. Ensuring an environmentally sustainable future will depend on how we manage risks and on how we mobilise capital towards green and low-carbon investment.”

The coalition, which now comprises 46 central banks and nine observers, provides Slovakia with a valuable communication channel for addressing one of the most pressing issues of our time. NBS’s membership of the NGFS was approved unanimously by its existing members. In his letter informing Governor Kažimír about the vote result, NGFS Chair Frank Elderson said: “We share your conviction that a synchronised global response to the challenges for global financial stability raised by climate is the best way forward for central banks and supervisors.”

Further underlining the importance of the climate change issue was the prominence given to it at the recent Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank Group.
