The External Debt of Slovakia as at 30 April 2008
As at the end of April 2008, the total gross external debt was USD 50.1 billion or EUR 32.2 billion. The total long-term external debt decreased by USD 0.1 billion in March when the total short-term external debt increased by USD 0.9 billion.
As to the short-term external debt, external liabilities of the commercial banks increased by USD 0.9 billion in April on a month-on-month basis and an increase of USD 1.0 billion was reported in the cash and deposits item. The short-term external liabilities of corporations decreased by USD 0.1 billion.
Regarding long-term external debt, the figure for external liabilities in the item Government and the NBS decreased by USD 0.2 billion, and the external liabilities of commercial banks increased by USD 0.1 billion.
The total gross external debt per capita in Slovakia was USD 9,322 at the end of April. The ratio of total short-term external debt to total gross external debt of Slovakia was 52.8 % at the end of April 2008, which was a month-on-month increase of 0.9 of a percentage point.

Net external debt, calculated as a deduction of gross external debt in the amount of USD 50.1 billion (NBS and Government liabilities, liabilities of commercial banks and liabilities of corporations – excluding capital participation) and foreign assets in the amount of USD 41.8 billion (NBS foreign exchange reserves, foreign assets of commercial banks, foreign assets of corporations – excluding capital participation) reached the debtor position of USD 8.3 billion at the end of April 2008.
