Description of the coin
The national side’s design is a mix of two major elements representing the Erasmus Programme: the original intellectual inspiration, Erasmus of Rotterdam; and an allegory of the programme’s influence in Europe. The first element is a profile depiction of Erasmus based on a famous portrait. The second, symbolising the numerous intellectual and human exchanges between European students under the Erasmus Programme, depicts a network of light beams emitted from and to beacons placed around the edge of the coin’s inner circle. Some of the spaces between the beams are filled in, creating a stylised ‘35’. In the lower right quadrantare four lines of inscriptions in semicircle: ‘1987-2022’, ‘ERASMUS’, ‘PROGRAMME’, and the name of the issuing country ‘SLOVENSKO’. Positioned above the hands of Erasmus are the initials ‘J.J.’ referring to the designer, Joaquin Jimenez. At the bottom of the design is the mint mark of the Kremnica Mint (Mincovňa Kremnica), consisting of the letters ‘MK’ placed between two dies. The coin’s outer ring bears the 12 stars of the European flag.
