Exchanging euro banknotes and coins
I. General information
We will exchange your euro banknotes and coins for other euro banknotes and coins of an equivalent total value, subject to the following fees:
- euro banknotes – free of charge;
- 5 cent, 10 cent, 20 cent, 50 cent, 1 euro and 2 euro coins – free of charge for up to 100 coins (of the same or different denominations). 1 cent and 2 cent coins – free of charge.
You can exchange euro banknotes and coins with us either
- in person – at the public counters of our headquarters or regional offices during the counter opening hours (if you wish to exchange more than 1,000 coins, we will arrange a specific time for the exchange);
or
- by post – by sending the cash to our headquarters. We will either send you your money by post (only in Slovakia) or pay it into a bank account.
We generally do not exchange euro banknotes and coins for euro collector coins or commemorative coins, or for banknotes or coins of a specific design, type or series, or for coins issued by a particular euro area country.
Before presenting banknotes and coins for exchange, you must sort them into their different denominations.
II. Exchange conditions and documents
- Exchanging banknotes and coins in person
Please bring your cash to a public counter at our headquarters or one of our regional offices during the counter opening hours.
There is no limit on the number of euro banknotes that you can present for exchange.
If you wish to exchange more than 1,000 euro coins, we will arrange a specific time for the exchange.
Bring with you an original or certified copy of your photo identity document (national identity card, passport, or residence permit).
For exchanges arranged at a specific time – whether because you are exchanging more than 1,000 coins or because the place of exchange is unable for operational or other reasons to exchange a smaller number of coins – you must submit a declaration.
- Exchanging banknotes and coins by post
There is no limit on the number of euro banknotes and coins that you can exchange by post.
Please be advised that you send us banknotes and coins at your own risk. So please take appropriate measures to insure against loss or theft.
Send your cash to our headquarters, along with the following:
– a certified copy of your photo identity document (national identity card, passport, or residence permit);
– a completed cash exchange form (natural person/entrepreneur/legal entity).
If you wish us to pay your money into a bank account, please include either of the following, not older than three months:
– the receiving bank’s original written confirmation that you are the account holder;
– a statement of the account which states your full name and address.
For payments to an account in Slovakia, please provide the name of the bank and the IBAN number of the account.
For payments to an account outside Slovakia, please fill out the form entitled “Mandatory data for reimbursement to foreign countries” and send it to us along with the cash you wish to exchange.
Notice: In the case of euro banknotes and euro coins exchange sent via post from abroad, the NBS doesn´t provide services of customs declaration and doesn´t reimburse any associated fees for the sender.
III. Relevant legislation
Národná banka Slovenska exchanges euro banknotes and coins in accordance with the following legislative provisions:
- Sections 17b and 17e of Act No 566/1992 on Národná banka Slovenska, as amended;
- Sections 3 and 4 of Regulation No 607/2008 of Národná banka Slovenska on certain details of cash circulation (and amending certain regulations);
- Regulation No 11/2011 of Národná banka Slovenska;
- Article 3 of Decision ECB/2013/10 of the European Central Bank of 19 April 2003 on the denominations, specifications, reproduction, exchange and withdrawal of euro banknotes (recast), as amended
- Act No 297/2008 on the prevention of money laundering and terrorist financing (and amending certain laws), as amended.
