The External Debt of Slovakia as at 30 November 2006
The total gross external debt was USD 31.5 billion (EUR 24.0 billion) as at the end of November and on a month-on-month basis it increased by USD 1.1 billion (EUR 10.5 million). The total long-term external debt increased by USD 1.2 billion in November while the total short-term external debt decreased by USD 0.1 billion.
As to the short-term external debt, a decrease of USD 0.6 billion in external liabilities of the commercial banks was reported in November (a decrease by USD 0.8 billion was reported in the cash and deposits items) when the external liabilities of corporations increased by USD 0.5 billion (from which a decrease of commercial loans represented USD 0.4 billion).
Regarding the long-term external debt, the figure for external liabilities in the item Government and the NBS increased by USD 0.4 billion due to increased interest in the government bonds. In the period under review, liabilities of corporations increased by USD 0.6 billion in the loans item. External liabilities of commercial banks increased by USD 0.2 billion.
The total gross external debt per capita in Slovakia was USD 5,860 at the end of November 2006. The ratio of total short-term external debt to total gross external debt of Slovakia was 46.9 % at the end of November 2006, which was a month-on-month decline of 2 percentage points.

Net external debt, calculated as a deduction of gross external debt in the amount of USD 31.5 billion (NBS and Government liabilities, liabilities of commercial banks and liabilities of corporations – excluding capital participation) and foreign assets in the amount of USD 26.9 billion (NBS foreign exchange reserves, foreign assets of commercial banks, foreign assets of corporations – without capital participation) reached the debtor position of USD 4.6 billion at the end of November 2006.
