The External Debt of Slovakia as at 30 November 2008
The total gross external debt was USD 43.1 billion (EUR 29.2 billion) as at the end of November. The total long-term external debt increased by USD 0.1 billion in November, while the total short-term external debt increased by USD 0.8 billion.
As to the short-term external debt, an increase of USD 0.2 billion in external liabilities of the commercial banks was reported in November in the cash and deposits item and in the other liabilities item. The short-term external liabilities of corporations increased by USD 0.6 billion, mainly owing to the increase of commercial loans.
Regarding the long-term external debt a contrary development in the commercial sector was seen, when external liabilities of corporations increased by USD 0.3 billion, to which loans mainly contributed, and external liabilities of the commercial banks decreased by USD 0.1 billion. External liabilities of the Government and the NBS decreased by USD 0.1 billion in the period under review. The total gross external debt per capita in Slovakia at the end of November was USD 8,014.
The ratio of total short-term external debt to total gross external debt of Slovakia was 52.5 % at the end of November 2007, which was a month-on-month increase of 2.3 percentage points.

* including government agencies and municipalities Net external debt, calculated as a deduction of gross external debt in the amount of USD 43.1 billion (NBS and Government liabilities, liabilities of commercial banks and liabilities of corporations – excluding capital participation) and foreign assets in the amount of USD 36.9 billion (NBS foreign exchange reserves, foreign assets of commercial banks, foreign assets of corporations – without capital participation), reached the debtor position of USD 6.2 billion at the end of November 2007.
