The External Debt of Slovakia as at 31 January 2008
The total gross external debt was USD 43.7 billion as at the end of January 2008, or Eur 29.5 billion. The total long-term external debt increased by USD 0.8 billion in September and the total short-term external debt decreased by USD 1.4 billion. As to the short-term external debt, external liabilities of the commercial banks decreased on a month-on-month basis by USD 1.3 in January in the cash and deposits item. The short-term external liabilities of corporations decreased altogether by USD 0.1 billion. Regarding the long-term external debt, the figure for external liabilities in the item Government and the NBS increased by USD 0.6 billion in the period under review particularly owing to the increased purchase of government bonds denominated in SKK. The long-term external liabilities of corporations increased altogether by USD 0.2 billion. The total gross external debt per capita in Slovakia was USD 8,117 at the end of January 2008. The ratio of total short-term external debt to total gross external debt of Slovakia decreased on a month-on-month basis by 5.5 percentage points at the end of January 2008 and reached the level of 50.8%.
