The External Debt of Slovakia as at 31 October 2006
The total gross external debt was USD 30.5 billion as at the end of October 2006, or EUR 23.9 billion, and, on a month-on-month basis, it increased by USD 1.1 billion (EUR 0.9 billion). In October, the total long-term external debt increased by USD 0.4 billion and the total short-term external debt increased by USD 0.7 billion. USD.
As to the total long-term external debt in October, the figure for external liabilities in the item Government and NBS decreased by USD 0.1 billion. In the commercial sector, external liabilities of corporations increased by USD 0.4 billion and that of commercial banks by USD 0.1 billion.
As to the short-term external debt of the commercial sector, an increase of USD 0.7 billion in the external liabilities of corporations was reported, mainly owing to the increase of external liabilities of commercial loans.
The total gross external debt per capita in Slovakia was USD 5,662 at the end of October 2006. The ratio of total short-term external debt to total gross external debt of Slovakia was 48.9 % at the end of October 2006, which was a month-on-month increase of 0.5 of a percentage point.

Net external debt, calculated as a deduction of gross external debt in the amount of USD 30.5 billion (NBS and Government liabilities, liabilities of commercial banks and liabilities of corporations – excluding capital participation) and foreign assets in the amount of USD 26.4 billion (NBS’s foreign exchange reserves, foreign assets of commercial banks, foreign assets of corporations – excluding capital participation) reached a debtor position of USD 4.1 billion at the end of October 2006.
