The External Debt of Slovakia as at 31 October 2007
The total gross external debt was USD 42.2 billion as at the end of October 2007, or EUR 29.3 billion. The total long-term external debt increased by USD 0.6 billion in October and the total short-term external debt increased by USD 1.8 billion. on which also the crossrate USD/EUR significantly participated . As to the short-term external debt, an increase of USD 1.0 billion in external liabilities of the commercial banks was reported in October in the cash and deposits item. The short-term external liabilities of corporations increased by USD 0.8 billion mainly owing to increase of commercial loans.
Regarding the long-term external debt, the figure for external liabilities in the item Government and the NBS slightly decreased. Within the commercial sector, external liabilities of corporations increased by USD 0.4 billion, in the loans item and external liabilities of commercial Banks increased by USD 0.2 billion which was affected mainly by the cash and deposits item. The total gross external debt per capita in Slovakia was USD 7,848 at the end of October. The ratio of total short-term external debt to total gross external debt of Slovakia was 50.2 % at the end of October 2007, which was a month-on-month increase of 1.5 percentage points.

* including government agencies and municipalities Net external debt, calculated as a deduction of gross external debt in the amount of USD 42.2 billion (NBS and Government liabilities, liabilities of commercial banks and liabilities of corporations – excluding capital participation) and foreign assets in the amount of USD 36.4 billion (NBS’s foreign exchange reserves, foreign assets of commercial banks, foreign assets of corporations – excluding capital participation) reached a debtor position of USD 5.8 billion at the end of October 2007.
