“The New Face of the Euro” exhibition opens in Bratislava

“The New Face of the Euro”, an exhibition organised by the European Central Bank (ECB), was opened today at Národná banka Slovenska by Harm Metselaar, Head of the Currency Management Division of the ECB, and Viliam Ostrožlík, Director of the Cash Department of Národná banka Slovenska. The purpose of the exhibition is to raise awareness of euro banknotes and coins and their security features in an appealing and interactive way. It is aimed at the public, and particularly secondary school students.

The “New Face of the Euro” offers a close look at the new €5 banknote and its enhanced security features, notably the hologram and watermark. They show a portrait of Europa, a figure from Greek mythology – hence the name of the new series of banknotes. It includes a film about the introduction of the Europa series as well as interactive applications and games on euro banknotes and coins, including the “Euro Run”. The exhibition also presents the pre-euro national currencies, explains the history of money and shows how banknotes are made. In addition, it includes short films about euro banknotes and coins as well as some touch screens with practical advice on how to check the banknotes.

Vernisáž výstavy

Bratislava is the latest city to host this travelling exhibition. It was first held at the Archaeological Museum in Frankfurt am Main in January this year, when ECB President Mario Draghi unveiled the Europa series €5 banknote.

The exhibition is open to the public from 8.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. Monday to Friday until 30 June 2013 at Národná banka Slovenska on Imricha Karvaša 1 in Bratislava.
