General information
Each party to a funds transfer between payment accounts is identifiable by the numbers assigned to their accounts by their payment service providers (e.g. banks and payment institutions). Account numbers assigned in Slovakia use the International Bank Account Number (IBAN) format.
Slovak account numbers in the IBAN format have 24 alphanumeric characters, including, in positions 5-8, the bank identifier of the payment services provider (PSP) servicing that account.
Any PSP authorised by Národná banka Slovenska (NBS) may apply to NBS for a bank identifier. The list of PSPs assigned a bank identifier by NBS is published on the NBS website.
Národná banka Slovenska also maintains a list of Creditor Identifiers (CIs) for direct debit transactions. Only natural or legal persons assigned a CI may initiate a direct debit transaction. To obtain a CI in Slovakia, a natural or legal person must request its PSP to apply directly to NBS for the issuance of the CI.
These pages of the NBS website also include basic information about the options available for alternative and (out-of-court) dispute resolution.
