Card transactions

The statistics cover transactions carried out using various card-based payment instruments, collected from multiple perspectives and breakdowns. Data are reported at different frequencies:

  • monthly – according to national requirements
  • semi-annually – according to ECB requirements

The number and value of transactions are reported cumulatively for the reference period.

Transactions made with cards issued in Slovakia

The statistics include all transactions made using payment cards issued in Slovakia, regardless of whether they were carried out within the territory of the Slovak Republic or abroad. The data are reported by Slovak payment service providers that issue payment cards. Transactions may be initiated using a card, mobile phone, watch, or another device.

Cash withdrawals may be carried out at ATMs and POS terminals. The data are broken down by the type of payment card used.

Payments include transactions for the purchase of goods and services made at POS terminals or via the internet. They are also classified according to whether a mobile wallet was used for the payment (e.g. Google Pay, Apple Pay, and others).

Card transactions carried out at terminals in Slovakia

The statistics include all card- based payment transactions, regardless of the country in which the cards were issued, where the point of sale is in Slovakia. Transactions may be conducted at ATMs, POS terminals, and with e-commerce merchants online.

The data are reported by Slovak payment service providers that accept and process payment transactions.

Semi-annual statistics – card transactions

A card transaction is a payment made using a payment card or a digital tool linked to a card, such as mobile devices or digital wallets. It can be carried out at a payment terminal, online, or in another electronic form.

Fraudulent payment transactions are also collected in the statistics. These may involve unauthorised transactions or situations in which a fraudster manipulates the payer into initiating the payment themselves. Fraud may arise, for example, as a result of loss, theft, or unauthorised acquisition of sensitive data.

The statistics include card-based payment transactions reported by Slovak payment service providers issuing these cards. Cash deposits and withdrawals are not included.

The data are broken down into domestic and cross-border transactions according to the country where the terminal is located. The use of strong customer authentication is also distinguished.
