SIPS

The SIPS payment system has been operated by Národná banka Slovenska since 1 January 2003.

As of the introduction of euro currency in Slovakia, the payment system SIPS became a retail payment system for processing customer payments. Interbank payments are processed via the TARGET payment system.

SIPS processes domestic and cross-border SEPA credit transfers (SCTs) and SEPA direct debits (SDDs). As regards SCTs and SDDs sent to payment service providers that are not SIPS participants, NBS ensures their processing through STEP2, a pan-European automated clearing house in which it is a direct participant.

The payment system SIPS is an ancillary system of TARGET payment system. Payment processing in the payment system SIPS is carried out in four clearing cycles, and the results of these cycles are settled in the TARGET payment system. The SIPS payment system’s rules are laid down in the Decision No 1/2025 of Národná Banka Slovenska of 24 March 2025 on the rules of the Slovak Interbank Payment System (SIPS)  as amended and SIPS Schedule of fees.
